Since the beginning of Augustus 2011 Thomson Reuters / ISI has changed the search and retrieval program of Web of Knowledge / Web of Science. This means that older saved search profiles cannot be used without changes.
What has been changed? Combining search terms using SAME now is processed in the same way as AND. Previously the meaning of SAME was: both words must be in the same sentence. Now this only applies for the address field. Instead, for other fields a function known from EMbase, and sadly missed in PubMed replaces it: NEAR/n (in which 'n' is a number). E.g.: (heart* OR card* OR myocard*) NEAR/3 (attack* OR infarct*) has the meaning: a word that begins with heart or card or myocard may maximally be on three words distance from a word beginning with attack or infarct. Hence, among others, correct findings are: myocardial infarction, heart attack, infarct of the heart.
ADVICE: in your search profile, replace the word SAME by (e.g.) NEAR/5 (just try what can be better: 3, 4 or 5).
Ttruncation also should be changed, but it turned out that practice doesn't correspond with the WoS manual of ISI, e.g. *card* can be used for cardial, cardiac, myocard, myocardial; but front truncation (left hand truncation) is not allowed.
The MedLib manual M205e (WoS) is in process.
The newest version X5 of EndNote is avaialble at SurfSpot since the beginning of August 2011.
The advantages are enorm: access to a new web database that can easily be synchronized with the local database; the pdf's can be interchanged between the local and the web database, also for home usage without a local EndNote program.
Formatting documents is possible using the local database as well the web version.
EndNote X5 will become the new standard for Erasmus MC SOM computers. Buy now at SurfSpot (€13,75).
Since today the Impact Factors for 2010 are available.
