Tue, 23 Aug 2011 08:11:47 -0700 Syntax searching via Web of Sience has changed http://medbib-en.posterous.com/syntax-searching-via-web-of-sience-has-change-53642 http://medbib-en.posterous.com/syntax-searching-via-web-of-sience-has-change-53642 Since the beginning of Augustus 2011 Thomson Reuters / ISI has changed the search and retrieval program of Web of Knowledge / Web of Science. This means that older saved search profiles cannot be used without changes.
What has been changed? Combining search terms using SAME now is processed in the same way as AND. Previously the meaning of SAME was: both words must be in the same sentence. Now this only applies for the address field. Instead, for other fields a function known from EMbase, and sadly missed in PubMed replaces it: NEAR/n (in which 'n' is a number). E.g.: (heart* OR card* OR myocard*) NEAR/3 (attack* OR infarct*) has the meaning: a word that begins with heart or card or myocard may maximally be on three words distance from a word beginning with attack or infarct. Hence, among others, correct findings are: myocardial infarction, heart attack, infarct of the heart.
ADVICE: in your search profile, replace the word SAME by (e.g.) NEAR/5 (just try what can be better: 3, 4 or 5).
Ttruncation also should be changed, but it turned out that practice doesn't correspond with the WoS manual of ISI, e.g. *card* can be used for cardial, cardiac, myocard, myocardial; but front truncation (left hand truncation) is not allowed.
The MedLib manual M205e (WoS) is in process.

Soon this application will be made availble for other computer areas of the Erasmus MC too.

Thu, 26 Aug 2010 00:47:00 -0700 Word 2010 does not collaborate with EndNote X3 http://medbib-en.posterous.com/word-2010-does-not-collaborate-with-endnote-x http://medbib-en.posterous.com/word-2010-does-not-collaborate-with-endnote-x

Warning: Word 2010 (now available via Surf Spot) can not cooperate with EndNote X3. EndNote X4 can work together with Word 2010, but that program is not available at SurfSpot. EndNote X4 is not compatible with EndNote X3, and will not be supported by the Medical Library in the near future.
Advice: Keep using EndNote X3 and Word 2003 or 2007 for the present!

Three warnings to prevent problems in using EndNote X3

with reference to manual EndNote X3
(MB-home > quicklink [14-Manuals] > link [701-EndNote X3])

1. on installation of EndNote X3: older version of EndNote en program Word must be closed (chapter 1.1)

2. on transportation (f.e. on memory stick): keep file 'name.enl' and group of folders 'name.data' together; make a Compressed Library (name.enlx) (chapter 1.4)

3. on online searching in PubMed (via Connect): first open a temporary library: click the 3rd menu icon ('Online Search Mode') (chapter 2.2.2)

Tue, 09 Mar 2010 12:00:00 -0800 Working via the VPN portal and experiencing problems with PubMed? http://medbib-en.posterous.com/access-to-medlib-website-via-vpn-disrupted-by http://medbib-en.posterous.com/access-to-medlib-website-via-vpn-disrupted-by

Access to PubMed from elsewhere (VPN portal) can be disrupted for some. We provided an extra link to PubMed on the startup screen of the VPN portal just below 'Medische Bibliotheek' that will solve the problem for most visitors.

However, if you experience problems while visiting PubMed via the VPN portal, please do try the following. Maybe following the first step will already work for you, then you don't have to follow the other steps.

Accept Cisco's Active X component

Go to the portal (http://vpn.erasmusmc.nl) and log in with your microsection number and password
Click the third link named 'PubMed'
A redirect is activated in which the URL will appear normal (www.pubmed.gov), but the portal is still active.
During this redirect a short note can be shown that something from Cisco (Active X) needs to be accepted, but this will often disappear in a fraction of a second. You can work around that with the following:

  1. In Internet Explorer go to Tools > Internet Options
  2. Click the tab Security
  3. Click [custom level]
  4. Browse to 'ActiveX controls and downloads > Download signed ActiveX controls' and select 'Prompt'
  5. Click [OK] twice

Add erasmusmc.nl and pubmed.gov to your trusted sites

  1. In Internet Explorer, go to Tools > Internet Options
  2. Click the tab Security
  3. Click the green icoon 'Trusted Sites'
  4. Click the button [Sites]
  5. When on the bottom of the screen the button 'Require server verification (https:)...' is active, remove it
  6. Fill in the top field: '*.erasmusmc.nl' and click [Add]
  7. Do the same for *.pubmed.gov
  8. Click [Close] and [OK]

Renew Java

Maybe you need to renew Java. You can do so here: http://java.com/en/download.

Tue, 28 Jul 2009 12:00:00 -0700 List of publications by department integrated in website even more easily http://medbib-en.posterous.com/list-of-publications-by-department-integrated http://medbib-en.posterous.com/list-of-publications-by-department-integrated

Lots of departments of the Erasmus MC present a list of their employees’ publications on the website. The process of gathering, structuring and placing them in the CMS is quite time consuming. The library has developed a procedure that will make this more easy.

If your department stores the metadata of its publications in EndNote we can provide on output style that defines an XML file that can be uploaded to Morello and published on the Erasmus MC website within minutes.

If you don't store publications in EndNote XML files can also be generated with nothing more than a simple list in a Word file, but that takes quite some extra steps.

The library can help you create a first literature list in this way, and will provide you a manual with which you can do this yourself the next time. The sorting and lay-out of the list will be altered according to your wishes. Please contact Wichor Bramer for more information.

The deparment of Internal Oncology have been the first to adopt this new procedure, as they were the first to ask for it. See their list of publications. They use the more complex way via Word. The department of Public Health are the first to use the EndNote way and present lots of different publications.
